Welcome to the Cowboy State!
Wyoming is one of the nation's least populated states but it is home to many natural wonders, including Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park. Although the state didn't adopt its motto, "Equal rights," until 1955, Wyoming has been at the forefront of women's liberation for more than a century. When the Wyoming Territory was organized in 1869, its female residents were given the right to vote. Wyoming became a state in 1890, and in 1925, Nellie Tayloe Ross became the nation's first female governor. Cowboys and cowgirls alike gather each year at the Wyoming State Fair & Rodeo, the Cody Nite Rodeo, and Cheyenne's Frontier Days celebration. Other attractions include Devils Tower, Flaming Gorge, Jackson Hole, the Fort Laramie National Historic Site and Fossil Butte National Monument.
The state's name comes from a Delaware Indian word meaning “mountains and valleys, alternating.” Its capital is Cheyenne, and major cities include Casper, Laramie and Gillette. More than 501,000 residents live in Wyoming, which spans 97,100 square miles. In 2000, the median value of owner-occupied housing units was $96,600.
