Wisconsin

Welcome to the Badger State!
Wisconsin is among the nation's top producers of milk and cheese. Dairy products are so popular in this Midwest state that fans of the Green Bay Packers are self-proclaimed "Cheeseheads" who wear yellow wedges of foam cheddar atop their noggins. There are more than 14,000 lakes in Wisconsin, offering boating, fishing and a variety of water sports. One of the most popular outdoor attractions is the Wisconsin Dells, a scenic part of the Wisconsin River. The Dells offers amusement parks, water parks, miniature golf and skiing along with waterways, nature trails and national preservation areas.
Other attractions include Cave of the Mounds, Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, Al Capone's Hideout, the National Railroad Museum, the Circus World Museum and Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin estate. The state's name is a French version of a Native American phrase, but experts are unsure about its meaning. Its capital is Madison, and major cities include Milwaukee, Green Bay, Kenosha, Racine and Oshkosh. Nearly 5.5 million residents live in Wisconsin, which spans 54,310 square miles. In 2000, the median value of owner-occupied housing units was $112,200.
