Real Estate & Homes in West Virginia - West Virginia homes and communities
West Virginia

Welcome to the Mountain State! West Virginia was a part of Virginia until the 1860s. Delegates from 40 western counties decided to form their own government after Virginia seceded from the Union in 1861, and West Virginia officially became a state in 1863. The state is rich in coal, and mining became an important industry in the late 19th century. Bloody strikes between miners and management in the 1920s required federal intervention, most notably at the Battle of Matewan. Today, the state is a quiet region where mining is joined with agriculture, steel production and chemical manufacturing. West Virginia is home to 37 state parks and recreation areas, nine state forests, and two national forests. Other attractions include Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, New River Gorge National River, the Cass Scenic Mountain Railroad and the Matewan Historic District.

The state was named in honor of Elizabeth I, the “Virgin Queen” of England. Its capital is Charleston, and major cities include Huntington, Parkersburg and Wheeling. More than 1.8 million residents live in West Virginia, which spans 24,078 square miles. In 2000, the median value of owner-occupied housing units was $72,800.
