Real Estate & Homes in Washington - Washington homes and communities
Washington
Welcome to the Evergreen State! In 1853, the Washington Territory was formed from part of the Oregon Territory. In 1889, it became the 42nd state to join the Union. The state's coastal location and Puget Sound harbors made it ideal for trading with Alaska, Canada and the Pacific Rim. Today, it remains a top West Coast port. Other major industries include lumber, agriculture and hydroelectric power. Washington boasts two large mountain ranges: the rainy Olympic Mountains, located on a peninsula west of Puget Sound, and the taller Cascades, home to Mount St. Helens and Mount Rainier. The volcanic Mount St. Helens shrank 1,300 feet when it blew its top in 1980. Mount Rainier is currently dormant, but scientists say the 14,410-foot mountain could explode one day in a similar manner.
The state's largest city, Seattle, hosted the 1962 World's Fair, and the event's futuristic Space Needle still stands tall over the city. Seattle's Pike Place Market is world-renowned for its fresh fish, flowers and produce, and the city is also known as a great place to hear up-and-coming musicians. Other points of interest around the state include the Columbia River Gorge, the Pacific Science Center, Snoqualmie Falls and the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site.
The state was named in honor of George Washington. Its capital is Olympia, and other cities include Tacoma, Spokane and Vancouver. More than 6 million residents live in Washington, which spans 66,544 square miles. In 2000, the median value of owner-occupied housing units was $168,300.
