Real Estate & Homes in Washington DC - Washington DC homes and communities
Washington, D.C.

Welcome to our nation's capital! Washington, D.C. — also known as the District of Columbia — is located between Virginia and Maryland on the Potomac River. The site was selected by Congress in 1790, and the capital city moved from Philadelphia to Washington on Dec. 1, 1800. Pierre Charles L'Enfant designed the city in a gridlike pattern. Numbered streets run north and south, and lettered streets go east and west. Until 1967, Washington, D.C., was administered by a three-member appointed commission. Currently, a mayor and a 13-member council control local operations. The city has one nonvoting member in the House of Representatives, and although it has often sought statehood, it remains a separate entity with limited voting rights for residents.
The local economy is centered on government and tourism, but the city is also home to a number of the nation's top colleges and universities, including Georgetown University, the Catholic University of America, Howard University and Gallaudet University. Some of the nation's most famous cultural attractions and monuments are also located within the city, including the Washington Monument, the Lincoln and Jefferson memorials, the White House, the Smithsonian Institution and the National Zoo. Washington, D.C., was named for George Washington and Christopher Columbus (District of "Columbia"). Surrounding suburbs include Arlington and Alexandria, Va.; and Bethesda, Wheaton and Silver Spring, Md. More than 572,000 residents live in Washington, D.C., which spans 68 square miles. In 2000, the median value of owner-occupied housing units was $157,200.
