Real Estate & Homes in Suffolk - Virginia - Suffolk, Virginia homes and communities SuffolkSuffolk HistorySuffolk is Virginia's largest city in area and one of Hampton Roads' fastest-growing communities. The city was first home to the Nansemond Indians, who hunted and gathered oysters along the Nansemond River. English settlers moved into the area in the early 1700s, and in 1742, the town of Suffolk was named after Gov. William Gooch's hometown of Suffolk County, England. The small town was burned by the British in 1779 and served as a Union Army camp during the Civil War. In 1910, Suffolk was incorporated as a city. When the cities of Suffolk and Nansemond merged in 1974, Suffolk grew overnight from a small town of two square miles to the state's largest city of 430 square miles — half the size of Rhode Island. And the region's population is projected to more than double over the next 20 years. That growth is also seen in increasing income levels.
