Portsmouth

Portsmouth History

Portsmouth's historic districts feature a rich diversity of architectural styles. It also has one of the oldest working harbors in the country.
Cruise into Portsmouth at Mile Marker Zero on the Intracoastal Waterway, and discover the perfect getaway destination. You can see a wide range of ships passing by the famous Seawall. Home of the deepest natural harbor, Portsmouth gives boaters easy access to the ocean and the Chesapeake Bay. This maritime community welcomes more than 12,000 boaters annually and is equipped to handle boats of all shapes and sizes.
Portsmouth was first explored by Capt. John Smith in 1608. A county government was seated in 1637, and the town of Portsmouth was established in 1752. In 1858, Portsmouth separated from county government and was chartered as an independent city. It has remained so ever since.
Today, Portsmouth and neighboring Norfolk form a major military center. The region is home to the headquarters of the 5th Naval District, the 2nd Fleet, the Atlantic Fleet and the Supreme Allied Command. Although the local shipyard is called named for Norfolk, it actually is located in Portsmouth.
