It has remained so ever since. Today, Portsmouth and neighboring Norfolk form a major military center. The region is home to the headquarters of the 5th Naval District, the 2nd Fleet, the Atlantic Fleet and the Supreme Allied Command. Although the local shipyard is called named for Norfolk, it actually is located in Portsmouth. ActivitiesThere are a variety of things to do in Portsmouth. Visit the Hoffler Creek Wildlife Preserve, a 142-acre site that includes wetlands, a heavily wooded forest and a unique saltwater lake.Golf at the recently renovated Bide-A-Wee Golf Course, an 18-hole championship facility.
