Real Estate & Homes in Norfolk - Virginia - Norfolk, Virginia homes and communities NorfolkNorfolk HistoryFounded in 1682, Norfolk has a proud coastal history. The city began as the Chesipean Indian town of Skicoak. By the time English settlers arrived to settle the island of Roanoke in 1585, the Chesipeans had abandoned the region. In 1591, the colony of Roanoke disappeared without a trace. More settlers arrived in 1607, and the first permanent English settlement was established at nearby Jamestown. Norfolk was chartered in 1682 and has been an important coastal port city ever since. In 1833, the first dry dock in the western hemisphere opened at Norfolk Naval Shipyard. And in 1862, the battle between the ironclads Merrimac and Monitor was fought in Hampton Roads, off Norfolk. Today, Norfolk and neighboring Portsmouth form a major military center. The region is home to the headquarters of the 5th Naval District, the 2nd Fleet, the Atlantic Fleet and the Supreme Allied Command. Although the local shipyard is called named for Norfolk, it actually is located in Portsmouth. Norfolk is often thought of as just a Navy city, but it has much more to offer. In 1907, Norfolk hosted the World's Fair as part of the Jamestown Tercentennial Exposition. The government took possession of the land after the fair closed, and some of the remaining structures survive at the city's "Admirals' Row." In 2000, the city hosted OpSail, the largest tall ship and maritime event in history. Norfolk seems destined to remain one of the East Coast's most prolific and popular ports.
