Real Estate & Homes in Virginia - Virginia
Virginia

Welcome to the Old Dominion! Virginia, the 10th state to enter the union, is also known as the "Mother of Presidents," because eight U.S. presidents were born there. Several presidents' homes are open to the public, including Washington's Mount Vernon and Jefferson's Monticello, and dozens of historic sites can be found throughout the state. Much of the nation's history begins in Virginia. Jamestown, founded in 1607, was the first permanent English settlement in North America. The colonial city of Williamsburg, now restored, gives modern-day visitors a taste of colonial life. And the American Revolution ended with the British surrender at Yorktown in 1781.
During the Civil War, Richmond was the capital of the Confederacy. At war's end, Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union troops at Appomattox Courthouse. Soldiers from both sides are honored at Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Parks, and Arlington National Cemetery is home to The Tomb of the Unknowns as well as the Eternal Flame of the Kennedy grave. Virginia is known for its beautiful beaches, but it is also home to many natural attractions, including Shenandoah National Park, Skyline Drive, Luray Caverns and the Blue Ridge National Parkway. The state was named in honor of Elizabeth I of England. Its capital is Richmond, and major cities include Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Newport News, Arlington and Alexandria. Nearly 7.4 million residents live in Virginia, which spans 39,594 square miles. In 2000, the median value of owner-occupied housing units was $125,400.
