Welcome to the Beehive State!
In 1824, American frontiersman Jim Bridger discovered the Great Salt Lake. Just 23 years later, Midwest Mormons who were fleeing religious persecution arrived in the region and began building Salt Lake City. Brigham Young laid the cornerstone to the Salt Lake Temple in 1853, and the state soon became the hub of the Mormon faith. Although the Mormons originally practiced polygamy, they renounced the practice in 1890. Six years later, Utah became the 45th state. Salt Lake City hosted the 2002 Winter Olympics, which showcased the state's natural beauty. Utah has nearly 157,000 acres of lakes and reservoirs, and several national parks, including Arches, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef and Zion. Other attractions include the Mormon Tabernacle, the Sundance Film Festival, Dinosaur National Monument, Rainbow Bridge, Timpanogos Cave and Monument Valley.
The state was named for the Ute Indian tribe. Its capital is Salt Lake City, and major cities include West Valley City, Provo, Sandy and Orem. More than 2.3 million residents live in Utah, which spans 82,144 square miles. In 2000, the median value of owner-occupied housing units was $146,100.
