The family-oriented community boasts a growing population, a thriving economy and varied career opportunities.The Colony was named after the Peters Colony Settlement, which was the only free land-grant colony in the Republic of Texas. Some portions of the land for The Colony were purchased from descendants of the original settlers in the 1840s. It was renamed Camey Settlement in the early 1900s but took its modern name when the city incorporated in 1977. The city's prime location makes it a great spot for homes and property development. Companies can capitalize on The Colony's work force and shopping power, and they have easy access to other high-income households in nearby communities. ActivitiesThe Colony is home to several parks and golf courses. Hidden Cove Park is a 750-acre municipally owned park on the shore of Lake Lewisville. There are also 23 municipal parks in the region.The Tribute at The Colony is an 18-hole golf course inspired by some of Scotland's most famous holes. The course was designed by golf architect Tripp Davis and pays homage to St. Andrews Nos. 1 and 18, North Berwich's Redan, Royal Troon's Postage Stamp, and Turnberry's Wee Burn. Stewart Peninsula Golf Course, also designed by Tripp Davis, features nine holes on Lake Lewisville. Because the course has two greens and two sets of tees at each hole, the course length is actually doubled. This design makes Stewart Peninsula only one of three courses nationwide with such a layout. With 23 miles of shoreline on beautiful Lake Lewisville, it's no wonder that The Colony calls itself "The City By The Lake."
