Real Estate & Homes in Texas - Texas homes, real estate and communities
Texas

Welcome to the Lone Star State!
Texas is the nation's second most populated state, and the second largest in area. There are 254 counties in Texas, whose terrain ranges from the plains of the Panhandle to the mountains of West Texas, the hills of Central Texas and the beaches along the Gulf of Mexico. Although it has a wild frontier history, Texas is a modern-day center of industry that's known for its wide expanses of land and rich oil fields. The Republic of Texas won its independence from Mexico in 1836, the same year that pioneers Jim Bowie and Davy Crockett were killed at the Battle of the Alamo. In 1845, Texas joined the Union as the 28th state. Although it now proudly flies the Stars and Stripes, the flags of six nations have flown over Texas: Spain, France, Mexico, the Republic of Texas, the Confederate States and now, the United States. Texas is a major agricultural and industrial state, leading all other states in oil, cattle, sheep and cotton. Other major industries include banking, real estate and tourism. Points of interest include the Alamo, the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center, the Gulf Coast resort area, Palo Duro Canyon, Big Bend National Park and Guadalupe Mountains National Park.
The state's name comes from a Native American word meaning "friends." Its capital is Austin, and major cities include Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, El Paso, Fort Worth and Arlington. Nearly 22 million residents live in Texas, which spans 261,797 square miles. In 2000, the median value of owner-occupied housing units was $82,500.
