Real Estate & Homes in Tennessee - Tennessee homes and communities
Tennessee

Welcome to the Volunteer State! Tennessee was the 16th state to join the Union. Originally a territory named Franklin, the region was renamed Tennessee and claimed statehood in 1796. The state was home to frontiersman Davy Crockett as well as three presidents: Andrew Jackson, Andrew Johnson and James K. Polk. Tennessee was a member of the Confederacy during the Civil War, and thousands of Union and Rebel soldiers were killed at Stones River, Shiloh, Fort Donelson and several other sites. After the war, the state reverted to its agricultural roots and became a top producer of tobacco, livestock and cotton. Today, Tennessee is known for its wide-ranging musical influences. From the mountain music of Appalachia to the Memphis blues and Nashville's country, this state offers it all. The Grand Ole Opry, Graceland, Sun Studios and Beale Street are popular tourist attractions that reflect Tennessee's musical roots. Other points of interest include Lookout Mountain, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the Appalachian National Scenic Trail, the Hermitage (Andrew Jackson's former home), the American Museum of Atomic Energy at Oak Ridge, and several national military parks and battlefields. The state was named for a Cherokee word, but its meaning is unclear. Its capital is Nashville, and major cities include Memphis, Knoxville, Chattanooga and Clarksville. More than 5.8 million residents live in Tennessee, which spans 41,217 square miles. In 2000, the median value of owner-occupied housing units was $93,000.
