Real Estate & Homes in South Dakota - South Dakota homes and communities
South Dakota

Welcome to the Mount Rushmore State!
South Dakota was explored by Lewis and Clark in 1804, but the region remained largely unsettled until gold was discovered in the Black Hills in 1874. Today, the Black Hills and Badlands National Park are among the most visited areas of this scenic Plains state. The Black Hills are home to several majestic monuments. Mount Rushmore, which was sculpted by Gutzon Borglum, is a natural treasure featuring the faces of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt. Nearby, you'll find a memorial to Chief Crazy Horse which, like Mount Rushmore, is carved in granite and visible for miles around. Each year, hundreds of thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts gather at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Other attractions include Custer State Park, a 71,000-acre grassland that's home to more than 1,500 wild bison; "Little Town on the Prairie," the setting for many of Laura Ingalls Wilder's popular books; the Mitchell Corn Palace, which features large-scale murals made of corn and native grasses; and the gambling town of Deadwood, where Wild Bill Hickok was fatally shot while holding the "dead man's hand" of aces and eights. The state's name comes from a Sioux word meaning “allies.” Its capital is Pierre, and major cities include Sioux Falls and Rapid City. Nearly 765,000 residents live in South Dakota, which spans 75,885 square miles. In 2000, the median value of owner-occupied housing units was $79,600.
