Real Estate & Homes in South Carolina - South Carolina homes and communities
South Carolina

Welcome to the Palmetto State! South Carolina was settled by England in 1670 as an agricultural region. Its plantation culture was largely dependent on slave labor. One of the original 13 colonies, the Carolina colony was divided in two in 1729 to form North and South Carolina. The attack on Charleston's Fort Sumter launched the Civil War in 1861. The state seceded from the Union and became part of the Confederacy, eventually rejoining the nation after the war's end. Today, South Carolina is a growing research center. Major industries include textiles, tourism, banking and agriculture. South Carolina's Grand Strand, a 60-mile section of coastline, is one of the nation's most popular vacation destinations. Other points of interest include Myrtle Beach, Fort Sumter National Monument, the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown and Middleton Place Gardens.
The state was named in honor of Charles I of England. Its capital is Columbia, and major cities include Charleston, Greenville, Spartanburg and Sumter. More than 4 million residents live in South Carolina, which spans 30,109 square miles. In 2000, the median value of owner-occupied housing units was $94,900.
