Real Estate & Homes in Rhode Island - Rhode Island homes and communities
Rhode Island

Welcome to the Ocean State! Rhode Island is the nation's smallest state, but it has long been big on human rights and religious freedom. Roger Williams founded Providence in 1636 after being exiled from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Other religious exiles soon followed, founding the towns of Pocasset (now Portsmouth) in 1638 and Newport in 1639. Rhode Island was the last of the original 13 colonies to join the United States, which it did in 1790. Since then, Rhode Island has become famous for its fishing, farming and jewelry manufacturing. Newport became a popular upscale resort in the mid-1800s. Its beachfront mansions are some of the most beautiful homes in the country. Other attractions the International Tennis Hall of Fame, the Newport Casino, Touro Synagogue, the Roger Williams National Memorial, Samuel Slater's Mill and Block Island.
The state was named for the Greek Island of Rhodes. Its capital is Providence, and major cities include Warwick, Cranston and Pawtucket. Nearly 1.1 million residents live in Rhode Island, which spans a mere 1,045 square miles. In 2000, the median value of owner-occupied housing units was $133,000.
