Real Estate & Homes in Pennsylvania - Pennsylvania homes and communities
Pennsylvania

Welcome to the Keystone State!
Pennsylvania was the second state to enter the union, in 1787. It received its "Keystone State" nickname because of its central location among the original 13 colonies. William Penn named the state after his father, and its name literally translates to "Penn's Woodland." This is evident in the many wooded areas found throughout the region. Pennsylvania is home to the rugged Allegheny Mountains, the rolling hills of Lancaster County and the third largest state park system in the United States. Although Pennsylvania is home to several major cities, it has the largest rural population in the nation. This diversity offers a variety of home styles and choices, from farms and cottages to single-family homes, condos and apartments, big-city high-rises and even a few houseboats. The state capital is Harrisburg, but two larger cities dominate the state: Philadelphia to the east and Pittsburgh to the west. Philadelphia is home to the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall and more than 1.5 million people. Pittsburgh is a thriving river port that's home to 335,000 residents. In between you'll find college towns, Civil War battlefields, bustling cities and small Amish communities. More than 12 million residents live in Pennsylvania, which spans 44,817 square miles. In 2000, the median value of owner-occupied housing units was $97,000.
