Real Estate & Homes in Oregon - Oregon
Oregon

Welcome to the Beaver State! Spanish sailors were the first Europeans to view the rugged Oregon coast. Captain James Cook, seeking a northwest passage, charted more of the coastline in 1778. The state's famed Columbia River was discovered in 1792 by Captain Robert Gray, who named the tributary after his ship. The river allowed explorers to venture further into the state's deep woods and forests. In 1805, the Lewis and Clark expedition explored the area. The Oregon Trail brought missionaries and wagon trains into the region in the 1830s and 1840s. Oregon was admitted as the 33rd state in 1859 and soon became a major lumber-producing state. Today, lumber remains the state's top industry. With low-cost electric power provided by dams, Oregon has developed into a leading manufacturer of paper, plywood and machinery. The state is also known for is salmon fishing and agriculture, including blackberries, raspberries, hazelnuts, hops and onions. Oregon is home to many natural attractions, including Crater Lake National Park, Mount Hood and Bonneville Dam. Other points of interest include the Columbia River Gorge, Hells Canyon, Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, Oregon Caves National Monument, Siuslaw National Forest, Newberry Volcanic National Monument and John Day Fossil Beds National Monument.
The origin of the state's name is unknown, but it may have come from the Wisconsin River, which is shown on a 1715 French map as "Ouaricon-sint." Its capital is Salem, and major cities include Portland, Medford, Eugene and Springfield. More than 3.5 million residents live in Oregon, which spans 95,997 square miles. In 2000, the median value of owner-occupied housing units was $152,100.
