Welcome to the Tar Heel State!

The first European attempt at a North American settlement was at Roanoke Island around 1587. No one knows what happened to the 117 inhabitants of the "Lost Colony," who vanished without a trace.  Colonization efforts continued, and North Carolina began as the northern part of a 1629 English land grant. It joined the Union in 1789, and is the 12th of the original 13 states.  During the colonial era, one of North Carolina's major products was tar. It also was a large agricultural area known for food crops and cotton. Today, tobacco is the state's main cash crop. Other major industries include paper, textiles, metals and tourism.

In 1903, Orville and Wilbur Wright achieved the first successful airplane flight at Kitty Hawk. The Wright Brothers National Memorial honors this momentous event. Other historical sites include Old Salem, the Guilford Courthouse Military Park, the Moores Creek National Battlefield and Carl Sandburg's home near Hendersonville.  North Carolina is known for its beautiful beaches, but it's also home to many natural attractions, including Chimney Rock, the Great Smoky Mountains, the Blue Ridge National Parkway, Cape Hatteras and Cape Lookout National Seashore.

The state was named in honor of Charles I of England. Its capital is
Raleigh, and major cities include Charlotte, Greensboro and Winston-Salem.  More than 8.3 million residents live in North Carolina, which spans 48,711 square miles. In 2000, the median value of owner-occupied housing units was $108,300.
