Real Estate & Homes in New York - New York

New York

Welcome to the Empire State!

The first European to visit New York was Giovanni da Verrazano in 1524. Since then, millions of immigrants have entered the country through this large northeastern state.  Henry Hudson discovered the Hudson River in 1609, the same year that northern New York was claimed by Samuel de Champlain. In perhaps the greatest real estate deal of modern time, Peter Minuit purchased Manhattan Island from Native Americans for $24 worth of trinkets in 1625. The Dutch colony of New Amsterdam soon developed on the island, which eventually grew into the nation's largest metropolis: New York City.

New York was site of several battles and historic events during the Revolutionary War. It became a state in 1788, and New York City even served as the nation's capital for a time. In the 1800s, New York state grew with the construction of the Erie Canal, the St. Lawrence Seaway, railroads and roadways. Today it is known as a center for entertainment, education and culture.  New York City is a leader in trade, commerce, banking and publishing. The city is home to hundreds of historic sites, including Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty, the United Nations, the Empire State Building, the Brooklyn Bridge, the New York Stock Exchange, Central Park, Broadway, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Grant's Tomb and Carnegie Hall.  Other attractions found throughout New York state include Niagara Falls, West Point, Fort Ticonderoga, the Catskills, the Women's Rights National Historical Park in Seneca Falls and the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.

The state was named in honor of the Duke of York. Its capital is
Albany, and major cities include New York City, Buffalo, Rochester, Yonkers and Syracuse.  Nearly 19.2 million residents live in New York, which spans 47,214 square miles. In 2000, the median value of owner-occupied housing units was $148,700.
