Real Estate & Homes in New Mexico - New Mexico homes and communities
New Mexico
Welcome to the Land of Enchantment! New Mexico is home to blue skies, pink mountains, and red and green chiles. It's also home to the oldest public building in America: Santa Fe's Palace of the Governors, which was built in 1610. For many years, New Mexico was governed by Spain or Mexico. After the Mexican War of 1848, the United States gained possession of the region. Although dozens of Native American tribes lived in New Mexico in the mid-1800s, just 22 distinct pueblos and tribes remain in the state today, each with its own separate, sovereign government. Taos and Santa Fe are thriving tourist communities that reflect the state's international heritage. Visit the squares in these unique cities to buy handmade crafts, food and jewelry from Native American artisans. Other attractions include Carlsbad Caverns National Park, White Sands National Monument, the Gila Cliff Dwellings, Bandelier National Monument, the "miraculous staircase" at Loretto Chapel, the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta, the Bradbury Science Museum at Los Alamos, and the International UFO Museum & Research Center in Roswell. The state's name comes from its proximity to Old Mexico. Its capital is Santa Fe, and major cities include Albuquerque, Las Cruces, Rio Rancho and Roswell. More than 1.8 million residents live in New Mexico, which spans 121,356 square miles. In 2000, the median value of owner-occupied housing units was $108,100.
