Pahrump
Pahrump History
The Pahrump Valley is one of the fastest-growing areas in Nevada. Sparsely populated farm land has been replaced with homes, businesses and master-planned communities that take advantage of the area's low cost of living and high quality of life. Located about 60 miles northwest of Las Vegas in Nye County, Pahrump offers small-town living within a short drive of the glittering Las Vegas Strip. Pahrump was named by the Southern Paiutes, who occupied the region centuries ago. "Pah," meaning water, and "Rimpi," meaning rock, eventually were combined into "Pahrump," which reflects the scenic surroundings of the Spring Mountains to the east and the Nopah Vista Mountains to the west.
Pahrump Featured Homes
Prostitution is legal in Nye County, and Pahrump is home to several brothels and adult-oriented businesses. Located just outside the town limits, these facilities attract a wide group of customers, from tourists and curiosity-seekers to high-paying regulars. But despite its sometimes "randy" image, Pahrump is a family community at heart. Schools and churches line the streets along with shops, restaurants, parks and playgrounds. For those seeking a peaceful alternative to big-city living, taking the drive "over the hump to Pahrump" may be the winning ticket.
Activities
Pahrump offers a variety of activities, ranging from outdoor adventure to dining, sports and recreation. The Spring Mountain National Recreation Area offers hiking, fishing, camping and more at Trout Canyon, Carpenter Canyon and Wheeler Pass. There are several ghost towns a few hours away in towns such as Goldfield and Rhyolite. And the town's main thoroughfare — Highway 160 — is the shortest route to nearby Death Valley, which is across the border in the California desert. Back in town, Honeysuckle Park has baseball diamonds, soccer fields, a play area and a new skate park. Petrack Park, the Bob Ruud Community Center and the McCullough Rodeo Arena also offer activities for sports fans of all ages. The Pahrump Valley Speedway is one of the nation's few remaining dirt racing tracks. You can watch street stock cars, modifieds and go-carts race around the facility — or take a spin yourself, if you dare. The Pahrump Valley Winery features top-notch wines served by the glass or with dinner at its family-friendly restaurant. Other restaurants offer casual and fast-food dining for those on the go. The Pahrump Fall Festival is one of the biggest events held in the Pahrump Valley. Thousands of visitors gather for the annual rodeo, carnival, and arts and crafts fair. And for those seeking a little "adult entertainment," there are several brothels and adult-oriented businesses located just outside the town limits.
