Real Estate & Homes in Mesquite - Nevada - Mesquite, Nevada homes and communities MesquiteMesquite HistoryLocated on the Nevada-Arizona border, just minutes from southwest Utah, Mesquite is a growing community of churches, casinos, retailers and resorts. The city began as a Mormon outpost on the Virgin River. Mormon pioneers tried to irrigate the region several times in the late 1800s, and in 1894, six families from nearby Bunkerville formed a permanent settlement at Mesquite Flats. Residents shortened the town's name to "Mesquite," and the small farming community soon began producing raisins, eggs and other agricultural products. Mesquite Featured HomesIn the early 20th century, Mesquite became a popular stop for tourists traveling local roads and highways. Motels and campgrounds catered to the travelers, whose numbers grew with the completion of Interstate 15 in the 1970s. By the early 1980s, residents decided to incorporate, and the town officially became a city in 1984. Today, Mesquite is still a popular tourist stop, although its year-round population is growing. New resorts and casinos offer dining, golfing and spa packages often at lower prices than neighboring Las Vegas. These bargain rates and its scenic location make Mesquite a popular getaway for residents of the tri-state area, as well as for "snowbirds" seeking a respite from cold Midwestern winters. ActivitiesMesquite sits between the big-city glamour of Las Vegas and the natural wonder of St. George, Utah. Many people pass through the community on their way to such attractions as Lake Mead, Lake Powell, Zion National Park and Brian Head Ski Resort. But you'll find plenty to do in this growing community.A self-guided walking tour will take you past several historic buildings, including the 1880s-era Rock House, the 1920s-era Granger Hotel and Dairy Barn, and the 1940s-era Virgin Valley Heritage Museum. Stop at the museum to learn more about the history of the city, including its Native American and Mormon past. The building was once known as the "old rock hospital," and its unique construction makes it a sight to be seen. Mesquite is home to several parks, offering a variety of outdoor amenities. Visit the Hillside Arboretum, Jensen Trailside Park and Pioneer Park to get a taste of the outdoors, or watch some Wild West action at the local Rodeo Grounds. There are several golf courses in the city, including the Casablanca Golf Club, the Palms Golf Club, Wolf Creek and the new Falcon Ridge Golf Course. Each course has its own charm and skill level, but all offer spectacular views of the Virgin River Valley. For indoor action, try one of the four local casinos: CasaBlanca Hotel/Casino/Golf/Spa; Eureka Casino Hotel; Oasis Resort Casino, Golf & Spa; and Virgin Valley Hotel Casino.
