Boulder City

Boulder City History

In 1930, the federal government began work on the Boulder Canyon Project, constructing a dam to help harness the power of the mighty Colorado River. Originally called Boulder Dam, the structure was renamed in honor of Herbert Hoover, the president who signed the project's start order and pushed for its completion.
Boulder City was created in 1931 to house the workers who built Hoover Dam. Row upon row of company homes sheltered thousands of workers and their families. When Boulder City was constructed, it was considered a model community that offered few of the vices of neighboring Las Vegas. That tradition continues today, as Boulder City is the only city in Nevada with no legalized gaming.

Construction on the dam took less than five years, and on Sept. 30, 1935, President Franklin Roosevelt presided over opening ceremonies. Seventy years later, Hoover Dam is a National Historic Landmark that has been named one of America's Seven Modern Civil Engineering Wonders.
Most of the dam workers moved away, but some residents stayed on, charmed by the city's scenic location. Although Boulder City is known for its small-town environment, the city actually claims the largest geographical area in Nevada – more than 200 square miles. The downtown area is home to a quaint shopping district, and several of the city's original single-row houses continue to serve as single-family dwellings. Larger homes are found throughout the city, offering scenic views of Lake Mead and the surrounding mountains.
Because Boulder City is located less than a half-hour away from Henderson and Las Vegas, it's a perfect bedroom community for those larger cities. With a population of just under 15,000 people, residents enjoy small-town living with a low crime rate and friendly atmosphere that are hard to beat.

Activities

Be sure to visit Hoover Dam, the engineering marvel that provides water and power to Southern California, Nevada and Arizona. You can take a drive across the dam or take a tour deep within its depths. A visitors center opened in 1995 to provide information and exhibits about the history of the dam and the area. Guided tours take about two hours.
Although there's no gaming in Boulder City, recreation abounds at local parks and the nearby Lake Mead National Recreation Area.
Lake Mead is surrounded by 550 miles of shoreline that's home to bighorn sheep, wild burros and other native wildlife. Boating is available on the lake year-round, along with swimming, water skiing, sailboarding and canoeing.
Boulder City's many parks offer a variety of outdoor activities. Five-acre Central Park has four tennis courts, picnic areas, play areas, a swimming pool and racquetball courts. Seven-acre Bicentennial Park has a gazebo bandstand and large play area. And 10-acre Hemenway Valley Park has a gazebo, playground equipment, basketball courts, two tennis courts, two softball fields and a view of Lake Mead.
The Boulder City Parks and Recreation Department operates the 18-hole municipal Boulder City Golf Course, which includes a driving range, chipping green, restaurant and clubhouse. Additional play can be found at the 27-hole Boulder Creek Golf Club, which opened in January 2003 and was voted "Best Par 4" by Vegas Golfer Magazine.
Every summer, the city gathers for the 4th of July Damboree Parade and Celebration. A pancake breakfast starts the day, followed by a parade, flag-raising, ball games and fireworks. Other annual events include the Boulder City Fine Arts Festival, Spring Jamboree, Chautauqua, Wurstfest, Art in the Park and the Doodlebug Bazaar.
