Welcome to the Treasure State! The United States built several forts and trading posts in Montana before it officially received the land from Great Britain in 1846. Some of these original structures still remain, including old Fort Benton and the Fort Union Trading Post. In 1876, Montana was the site of the infamous Battle of the Little Bighorn, known as “Custer's Last Stand,” in which Sioux and Cheyenne warriors defeated Lt. Col. George Custer and his troops. It's also site of Yellowstone National Park, which is home to Old Faithful, the Upper Geyser Basin, Hayden Valley, Mammoth Hot Springs and Yellowstone Lake. Other attractions include Glacier National Park, the Continental Divide, Virginia City, the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, the Museum of the Plains Indians and Grant-Kohr's Ranch National Historic Site.
The state's name is adapted from the Spanish word for “mountain.” Its capital is Helena, and major cities include Billings, Missoula, Great Falls, Butte and Bozeman. More than 917,000 million residents live in Montana, which spans 145,552 square miles. In 2000, the median value of owner-occupied housing units was $99,500.
