Real Estate & Homes in Missouri - Missouri
Missouri
Welcome to the Show Me State! Missouri is the Gateway to the West, located just across the Mississippi River from Illinois, Kentucky and Tennessee. The region was settled by fur traders and explorers in the 1700s, and it became a state after the Missouri Compromise of 1820. Under the compromise, all incoming states north of Missouri's southern border would forbid slavery, while those south of the boundary would permit it. Missouri itself entered as a slave state, although its residents remained divided on the issue well until the Civil War. Missouri was home to the eastern starting point of the Pony Express, the Oregon Trail and the Santa Fe Trail. These historic paths are honored at the Pony Express Museum at St. Joseph and the National Frontier Trails Museum in Independence. Independence is also site of the Harry S Truman Home and Library. Other attractions throughout the state include Branson, the "Live Music Show Capital of the World"; Lake of the Ozarks; Meramec Caverns; the Missouri Wine Country; Mark Twain's boyhood home in Hannibal; and the Gateway Arch, Grant's Farm and Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis. Sports teams include the St. Louis Rams (NFL), Cardinals (MLB) and Blues (NHL); and the Kansas City Chiefs (NFL) and Royals (MLB). The state was named after the Missouri Indian tribe. Its capital is Jefferson City, and major cities include Kansas City, St. Louis, Springfield and Independence. More than 5.7 million residents live in Missouri, which spans 68,886 square miles. In 2000, the median value of owner-occupied housing units was $89,900.
