Real Estate & Homes in Mississippi - Mississippi homes and communities
Mississippi
Welcome to the Magnolia State! The famous Mississippi River runs along the western border of the state, which is also home to several smaller tributaries. With its rich soil and many rivers, agriculture has thrived here for hundreds of years. Until the boll weevil arrived in the early 20th century, cotton was king in Mississippi. Today, cotton competes with crops like soybeans, and manufacturing has become the state's major industry. Mississippi is the nation's largest producer of upholstered furniture, and its gulf coast is a popular tourist destination. In 1817, Mississippi entered the Union as the 20th state. It was a stronghold of the Confederacy during the Civil War and suffered the largest percentage killed from any Confederate state. Many of Mississippi's historical sites date back to the Civil War, including Brices Cross Roads National Battlefield, the Tupelo National Battlefield, the Jefferson Davis Presidential Library and Vicksburg National Military Park. The state also boasts several antebellum mansions. Other points of interest include The Spanish Fort, Gulfport, Krebs Lake and part of Natchez Trace National Parkway. The state's name comes from an Indian word meaning "great waters" or "father of waters." Its capital is Jackson, and major cities include Biloxi, Greenville, Meridian and Hattiesburg. More than 2.8 million residents live in Mississippi, which spans 46,907 square miles. In 2000, the median value of owner-occupied housing units was $71,400.
