Shakopee

Shakopee Background

Shakopee, a scenic community named for a Native American chief, is located in the southwestern corner of the Twin Cities metro area. Pronounced "SHAWK-o-pee," the city's namesake was head of the Santee tribe, an offshoot of the Dakota Sioux who once resided in the Minnesota River Valley.
In 1844, fur traders Oliver and Harriet Faribault built the first log structure in the area. The Faribaults' cabin is now located at Murphy's Landing, a historical site just east of Shakopee. A few years later, trappers and traders began moving to the area, which was officially opened to settlers in 1851.
By 1853, Chief Shakopee and his tribe had moved to federal reservations upriver, and more white settlers began building homesteads on the fertile land. Shakopee was incorporated as a city in May 1857, and a bridge was built across the Minnesota River in 1890. By 1900, the population of Shakopee had reached 2,047.
Shakopee is located in Scott County, one of the fastest-growing counties in the United States. The city boasts a thriving downtown business district, affordable housing and an outstanding public school district. A wealth of recreational activities keeps residents and visitors entertained year-round.
