Eden Prairie

Eden Prairie Background

In 1851, a treaty opened much of the land west of the Mississippi River, making it easy for pioneers to settle in the Minnesota territory. The small farming community of Eden Prairie was named by visiting writer Elizabeth Fry Ellet, who proclaimed it the “garden spot” of the territory.
Minnesota became a state on May 11, 1858, and on that same date, the Eden Prairie town board held its first meeting. By 1880, the town's population had grown to 749 residents. It soon became a thriving agricultural area and remained so throughout the new century.
Eden Prairie was a relatively small town until 1946, when the Flying Cloud Airport, a former Navy training facility, opened to the public. New business and residents discovered the scenic community, and by 1960, Eden Prairie had more than 2,000 residents. Over the next few decades, the region experienced a population boom, and Eden Prairie became a bedroom community for the neighboring Twin Cities.
Today, Eden Prairie offers a unique mix of business, agriculture and upscale living in Hennepin County. The city is home to friendly people, excellent schools, thousands of acres of parks and open space, and a thriving business community.
