The small farming community of Eden Prairie was named by visiting writer Elizabeth Fry Ellet, who proclaimed it the “garden spot” of the territory.Minnesota became a state on May 11, 1858, and on that same date, the Eden Prairie town board held its first meeting. By 1880, the town's population had grown to 749 residents. It soon became a thriving agricultural area and remained so throughout the new century. Eden Prairie was a relatively small town until 1946, when the Flying Cloud Airport, a former Navy training facility, opened to the public. New business and residents discovered the scenic community, and by 1960, Eden Prairie had more than 2,000 residents. Over the next few decades, the region experienced a population boom, and Eden Prairie became a bedroom community for the neighboring Twin Cities. Today, Eden Prairie offers a unique mix of business, agriculture and upscale living in Hennepin County. Bryant Lake offers fishing, boating and seasonal swimming. A 12-hole disc-golf course is open from sunrise to sunset, and other amenities include picnic areas and a public pavilion, a large children's play area, 1.9 miles of paved bike/hike trails and two miles of turf/pet trails. Disc golf also can be played at the city's Staring Lake, which offers swimming, fishing and picnic areas as well as outdoor concerts each summer. League sports are available through the city in such activities as softball, volleyball, basketball and broomball. Adult flag football is also played in the Eden Prairie Dome. The Eden Prairie Community Center is a popular gathering spot that offers art exhibits, meeting rooms, a swimming pool and a fitness center. And the Eden Prairie Community Theatre and the Eden Prairie Community Band offer local actors and musicians a chance to share their talents with their neighbors. Both groups are sponsored by the city. Eden Prairie's 100-acre downtown district, the Major Center Area, is undergoing extensive renovation to become architecturally unified and pedestrian-friendly. Boutiques, stores and restaurants offer residents a variety of shopping and dining options. SchoolsThere are 14 public schools in Eden Prairie, including the award-winning Eden Prairie High School.
