Carver

Carver Background

Carver sits on the west bank of the Minnesota River, about 30 miles upstream from St. Paul. In 1854, former territorial Gov. Alexander Ramsey named the town in honor of Jonathan Carver, a British explorer who visited the region during a trip along the Minnesota River in 1766.
Although Carver was named for an Englishman, its first modern inhabitant was Axel Jorgenson, a Norwegian immigrant. Jorgenson claimed 415 acres in 1852 and soon established a homestead. The town was surveyed and platted in 1857, and it was incorporated into a village in 1877.
Carver is the oldest city in Carver County and the first to have a Historic District on the National Historic Register. The Historic District has 100 structures, including banks, homes and churches; a stone arch bridge; and a wooden railroad water tower. The Temperance Hotel, which was constructed in 1857, was the first hotel built in Carver. One of many original hotels, only the Temperance remains.
