Real Estate & Homes in Minnesota - Minnesota homes and communities
Minnesota

Welcome to the Land of 10,000 Lakes! The first visitors to this scenic northern state were Native Americans, French explorers, fur traders and missionaries. The United States won the eastern portion of the state from Great Britain after the Revolutionary War, and it acquired the western part from France in the 1803 Louisiana Purchase. Minnesota became a state in 1858. It is known for its lakes, agriculture and other natural resources. The "Twin Cities" of Minneapolis and St. Paul are centers of publishing, trade and technology. Rochester is home to the Mayo Clinic, a world-class medical center. And tiny Angle Inlet is the northernmost point of the 48 contiguous states. Tourism is a major draw for Minnesota, whose lakes and wooded areas provide ample opportunity for hunting, fishing, water sports and winter activities. Another major draw is the Mall of America, the nation's largest retail and entertainment complex. Located in the Twin Cities suburb of Bloomington, the 4.2-million-square-foot complex is home to more than 520 stores, the Camp Snoopy theme park, the Underwater Adventures aquarium, a 14-screen theater, a bridal chapel and an onsite police station. Other attractions include the Minnesota Zoological Gardens, the St. Paul Winter Carnival, Valleyfair amusement park, Canterbury Downs racetrack and Mystic Lake Casino. The state was named for a Dakota Indian word that means "sky-tinted water." Its capital is St. Paul, and major cities include Minneapolis, Rochester, Duluth and Bloomington. More than 5 million residents live in Minnesota, which spans 79,610 square miles. In 2000, the median value of owner-occupied housing units was $122,400.
