Real Estate & Homes in Michigan - Michigan homes and communities
Michigan
Welcome to the Great Lakes State! Michigan comprises two regions: the Upper Peninsula and the Lower Peninsula. The state touches four of the five Great Lakes and is separated by the Straits of Mackinac. Fishing and water sports are popular in Michigan, which is home to beautiful Mackinac Island, a Victorian-era village that was featured in the film "Somewhere in Time." Michigan is the nation's top producer of motor vehicles and auto parts. It's also a leader in prepared cereal, apples, airplane parts and machinery. Motown Records was founded in Detroit, and Michigan is the home of an eclectic group of musicians, from Stevie Wonder and Diana Ross to Madonna, Eminem, Ted Nugent and the White Stripes. The Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village have a variety of historical artifacts, including Lincoln's chair, Kennedy's limousine, the Rosa Parks Bus and a restored Model T. Other attractions include the Motown Historical Museum, Kellogg's Cereal City USA, the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.
The state's name comes from a Native American word, “Michigana,” which means “large lake.” Its capital is Lansing, and major cities include Detroit, Grand Rapids, Warren, Sterling Heights, Flint and Ann Arbor. More than 10 million residents live in Michigan, which spans 56,804 square miles. In 2000, the median value of owner-occupied housing units was $115,600.
