Real Estate & Homes in Massachusetts - Massachusetts
Massachusetts

Welcome to the Bay State! Massachusetts has played a major role in American history since 1620, when the Pilgrims founded Plymouth Colony. Massachusetts was one of the original 13 colonies and was a stronghold against British occupation in the mid-1700s. In 1773, locals dumped tea into Boston Harbor to protest unjust taxation. The famous Boston Tea Party set off a string of protests that culminated in the American Revolution. The war started with "the shot heard 'round the world" at Lexington and Concord in 1775 and ended eight years later. During the 19th century, Massachusetts was a hotbed of intellectual activity for such writers as Emily Dickinson, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne and Henry David Thoreau. That tradition continues at the state's colleges and universities, which are among the best in the nation. Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are both located in Cambridge, and the state is also home to Amherst, Boston College, Tufts, Wellesley and the Berklee College of Music. Massachusetts became the nation's sixth state in 1788. Health care, tourism, education, finance and insurance, and farming and fishing are the state's major industries. The state was named from two Massachusett Indian words meaning "great mountain place." Boston is the capital, and other major cities include Worcester, Springfield, Lowell and Cambridge. Boston is home to a majority of the state's historical attractions, including the Bunker Hill Monument, Paul Revere's House, the Old North Church and Old State House, Faneuil Hall, the USS Constitution, and the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum. Other attractions include Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, the Berkshires, the Salem Witch Museum, Minute Man National Historical Park and the Charlestown Navy Yard.
The state is represented by teams in all four major professional sports: the Boston Celtics in basketball, the New England Patriots in football, the Boston Red Sox in baseball and the Boston Bruins in hockey. More than 6.4 million residents live in Massachusetts, which spans 7,840 square miles. In 2000, the median value of owner-occupied housing units was $185,700.
