Welcome to the Old Line State!
In 1632, Charles I granted a charter for Maryland to Cecil Calvert, Lord Baltimore. The region became home to many English settlers seeking religious freedom. Maryland became a state in 1788 and ceded land for the development of Washington, D.C., in 1791. During the War of 1812, Maryland came under attack from British troops. In 1814, the bombing of Fort McHenry inspired Francis Scott Key to write “The Star-Spangled Banner," putting his words to the music of an English drinking song.
Baltimore is the largest city in the state. This coastal town is located on Chesapeake Bay, which produces more seafood than any comparable body of water in the world. The city is also home to the Fort McHenry National Monument, the National Aquarium, the USS Constellation, Camden Yards, Johns Hopkins University, and the popular Inner Harbor shopping and dining district. Other attractions include the Ocean City beach resort, Harpers Ferry National Historic Park, Antietam National Battlefield, Goddard Space Flight Center and the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis.
The state was named in honor of Henrietta Maria, wife of England's Charles I, and its capital is Annapolis. Other major cities include Gaithersburg, Frederick, Rockville and Bowie. More than 5.5 million residents live in Maryland, which spans 9,774 square miles. In 2000, the median value of owner-occupied housing units was $146,000.
