Real Estate & Homes in Maine - Maine
Maine

Welcome to the Pine Tree State!
For much of its early history, Maine was governed by Massachusetts. In 1820, Maine entered the Union as the 23rd state. This scenic region offers beaches, lakes, mountains, and endless forests of pine trees, maples, birches and white oaks. Maine grows 98% of the nation's blueberries. It also produces apples, poultry, lobster and sardines. With trees growing on 90 percent of the state's land, it's no surprise that Maine is also one of the world's largest paper producers. Major attractions include Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor, Allagash National Wilderness Waterway, Roosevelt Campobello International Park, the St. Croix Island National Monument and the Wadsworth-Longfellow House.
The state's name was selected to distinguish the mainland from its offshore islands. Its capital is Augusta, and major cities include Portland, Lewiston and Bangor. More than 1.3 million residents live in Maine, which spans 30,862 square miles. In 2000, the median value of owner-occupied housing units was $98,700.
