Welcome to the Pelican State!

When Thomas Jefferson made the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, he nearly doubled the size of the United States. Later, 13 states or parts of states were carved out of the territory from the Louisiana Purchase.  Louisiana has a colorful history. The state was governed under 10 different flags, including the Union Jack of Great Britain, the Tricolor of Napoleon, and the Stars and Stripes of the United States. A strong French influence is still evident throughout the state, particularly in the Cajun and Creole areas of the Mississippi delta, where a regional form of French is still spoken. The state capital, Baton Rouge, is French for "red stick" and was named because French-Canadian explorer Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville observed a red cypress post during a visit in 1699.

Today, Louisiana is famous for its relaxed atmosphere and regional cuisine. The state's largest city, New Orleans, is known for its Mardi Gras and jazz festivals. Tourism is a major industry, along with manufacturing, minerals, fishing and petroleum.  Historical sites include New Orleans' French Quarter, Chalmette National Historical Park, numerous plantation homes and Cajun country. Other points of interest include the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park & Preserve, Avery Island, Kisatchie National Forest, the Confederate Museum and the Superdome.

The state was named in honor of Louis XIV of France. Major cities include New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Lake Charles, Lafayette and Shreveport.  Nearly 4.5 million residents live in Louisiana, which spans 43,562 square miles. In 2000, the median value of owner-occupied housing units was $85,000.
