Real Estate & Homes in Kentucky - Kentucky homes and communities
Kentucky

Welcome to the Bluegrass State! Kentucky is known for its racehorses, bourbon and tobacco, but there's much more to this beautiful region. In 1774, the first settlement was established at Harrodsburg. A year later, Daniel Boone blazed a trail through the Cumberland Gap and founded Boonesboro. In 1792, Kentucky entered the Union as the 15th state. Abraham Lincoln was born in Kentucky, as was Jefferson Davis, the president of the Confederacy. During the Civil War, the slave state supplied troops to both North and South.
Today, Kentucky is a mix of old and new. Besides the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, visitors enjoy the rolling hills near Lexington and the hidden marvels of Mammoth Cave, the most extensive known cave on Earth. Other attractions include Old Fort Harrod State Park, the Lincoln Birthplace National Historic Site, the Patton Military Museum at Fort Knox, the Kentucky Bourbon Festival in Bardstown and Stephen Foster's "Old Kentucky Home."
The state's name comes from an Iroquois word meaning “land of tomorrow.” Its capital is Frankfort, and major cities include Lexington-Fayette, Louisville, Owensboro and Bowling Green. More than 4.1 million residents live in Kentucky, which spans 39,728 square miles. In 2000, the median value of owner-occupied housing units was $86,700.
