Real Estate & Homes in Kansas - Kansas homes and communities
Kansas
Welcome to the Sunflower State!
Kansas is a leading wheat producer, but it also is known for aircraft manufacturing, meat packing and helium production. In the early and mid-1800s, three outposts — Fort Leavenworth, Fort Scott and Fort Riley — were built to protect travelers on the Santa Fe and Oregon Trails. Small cities grew around these outposts, and residents eventually spread throughout the state. Although Kansas is a peaceful place today, it wasn't always this way. In the years leading up to the Civil War, battles between pro- and anti-slavery forces prompted the nickname "Bleeding Kansas." In 1865, the Plains Indian Wars erupted between Native Americans and white settlers. And in 1954, the state was a key player in the battle for civil rights in the case of Brown vs. the Board of Education of Topeka.
All of these historical events are commemorated at the Kansas History Center in Topeka. Other attractions include Fort Leavenworth and Fort Riley; Old Town Dodge City; President Eisenhower's boyhood home, memorial museum and presidential library at Abilene; John Brown's cabin at Osawatomie; and the "World's Largest Ball of Sisal Twine" in Cawker City.
The state's name comes from a Sioux word meaning “people of the south wind.” Its capital is Topeka, and major cities include Wichita, Overland Park, Kansas City and Olathe. More than 2.8 million residents live in Kansas, which spans 81,815 square miles. In 2000, the median value of owner-occupied housing units was $83,500.
