Real Estate & Homes in Iowa - Iowa homes and communities
Iowa

Welcome to the Hawkeye State!
Corn is king in Iowa, but that's not all that grows in this fertile Heartland state. Iowa produces a tenth of the nation's food supply and is a leader in soybeans, pork and livestock. It also produces lumber, cement, limestone and coal. When Iowa became a state in 1846, Iowa City was its capital. Today, Iowa City is a bustling college town that's home to the University of Iowa. Des Moines has been state capital since 1857. Centrally located in south-central Iowa, it remains the state's largest city. In nearby Madison County, you'll find the quaint covered structures made famous by Robert James Waller in his best-seller, "The Bridges of Madison County." Other attractions include the Amana Colonies, the Fort Dodge Historical Museum, the Effigy Mounds National Monument, and the Herbert Hoover birthplace and library.
The state's name comes from an Indian word meaning “the beautiful land.” Major cities include Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Davenport, Sioux City, Waterloo and Iowa City. Nearly 3 million residents live in Iowa, which spans 55,869 square miles. In 2000, the median value of owner-occupied housing units was $82,500.
