Indiana
Welcome to the Hoosier State!
Before becoming a state in 1816, Indiana was the site of frequent Native American uprisings. Today, the most publicized battles in Indiana take place on the basketball court. The state is known for its hoops-crazed culture, which was popularized in the film "Hoosiers," and it's equally famed for the annual Indianapolis 500, one of auto racing's most prestigious events. Most of the nation's limestone is quarried in Indiana, which also produces corn, coal and auto parts. Attractions include Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, Wyandotte Cave, Conner Prairie Pioneer Settlement, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial, the George Rogers Clark National Historical Park, the Children's Museum of Indianapolis and the NCAA Hall of Champions. The state's name means "land of Indians." Its capital is Indianapolis, and major cities include Fort Wayne, Evansville, South Bend and Gary. Nearly 6.2 million residents live in Indiana, which spans 35,867 square miles. In 2000, the median value of owner-occupied housing units was $94,300.
