When Elburn was settled in the 1830s, it was known as Blackberry. The original name of Blackberry was soon changed to Melbourne, but the C&NW Railroads decided that there were already too many Melbournes along its line. A committee was formed, and "Elbourne" was selected for the community’s new name. In 1886, the name was shortened to the present-day “Elburn.” Although the town is more than 150 years old, most of Elburn’s growth came in the 1990s, when new subdivisions were developed and the industrial park expanded.
