The Windy City is home to two impressive bodies of water: the Chicago River and Lake Michigan.

The Chicago River System is 156 miles long. The river's main branch flows due west from Lake Michigan,
past the Wrigley Building and the Merchandise Mart.

Chicago has nearly 45 movable bridges that cross the river -- more than any other city.

As many as 52,000 vessels travel the river each year, including commercial, recreational and passenger boats.

Many of these boats also venture into nearby Lake Michigan, the third largest Great Lake by surface area
and the sixth largest freshwater lake in the world.

Lake Michigan provides swimming, boating and fishing opportunities as well as a scenic backdrop to the city.
