Batavia is about 40 miles west of Chicago in the center of the Fox River Valley.The aptly named Christopher Columbus Payne first arrived in Batavia in 1833. With industries fueled by the Fox River, Batavia became one of the world’s top windmill manufacturers and soon was known as "The Windmill City." Batavia's rock quarries supplied the stones that helped to rebuild Chicago after the Great Fire of 1871. Batavia was also home to Bellevue Place, a sanitarium and rest home where Mary Todd Lincoln spent three months after her husband’s assassination in 1865. Today, life in Batavia harkens back to the small-town descriptions of Mark Twain and Sinclair Lewis. Flag Day originated in Batavia, and several windmills grace the downtown square. The city is also home to Fermilab National Accelerator Laboratory, a Department of Energy facility dedicated to high-energy physics research. ActivitiesThe Batavia Park District offers more than 1,000 programs and services annually in its 29 parks. The district also maintains bike trails, ski trails, community and civic centers, and boating and fishing facilities.Quarry Park Swimming Pool is a popular facility located within one of the city's historic stone quarries.
