Real Estate & Homes in Illinois - Illinois homes and communities
Illinois

Welcome to the Land of Lincoln!
The first Europeans to visit the "Prairie State" were French explorers Jacques Marquette and Louis Joliet in 1673. A French settlement was built in 1699 at Cahokia, across the river from modern-day St. Louis. Cahokia is also the site of ancient Indian burial mounds that date back to 700 AD. In the late 1700s and early 1800s, Illinois was site of several battles in the Revolutionary War, the French and Indian Wars, and other Native American skirmishes. Abraham Lincoln rose from farmer to president after serving as stint as an Illinois senator. And the city of Chicago grew from a small town into a major lakeside metropolis.
Today, Illinois is a top producer of soybeans, corn and pork. Chicago is home to the Sears Tower, the Field Museum, Navy Pier, Wrigley Field, the Art Institute, Shedd Aquarium and hundreds of restaurants serving world-famous Chicago hot dogs and deep-dish pizza. Central Illinois has many Lincoln-related sites, including Lincoln's Home, Lincoln's Tomb, New Salem State Historic Site, and the new Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. Other attractions include the Amish Interpretive Center in Arcola, Ronald Reagan's boyhood home in Dixon, the Joseph Smith Historic Center in Nauvoo, Giant City State Park in Makanda and Garden of the Gods near Herod.
The state was named for an Algonquin word meaning “tribe of superior men.” Its capital is Springfield, and major cities include Chicago, Aurora, Rockford and Peoria. More than 12.6 million residents live in Illinois, which spans 55,584 square miles. In 2000, the median value of owner-occupied housing units was $130,800.
