Real Estate & Homes in Idaho - Idaho homes and communities
Idaho

Welcome to the Gem State!
The region was first explored by Lewis and Clark in 1805, when it was part of the Oregon territory. It formally became part of the United States through the Oregon Treaty of 1846, and Mormon settlers set up a permanent camp at Franklin in 1860. That same year, gold was discovered at Orofino Creek, which attracted swarms of new settlers and prospectors. Idaho became a state in 1890, and although the gold was soon depleted, it still offers a wealth of silver, cobalt and lead. Idaho is known for its "famous potatoes," but it's become a hotbed for technology and recreation. Tourism now outranks other industries, with the state's myriad streams and lakes offering hunting and fishing, and resorts such as Sun Valley providing swimming, golfing and skiing.
Other attractions include Hells Canyon, the Craters of the Moon National Monument; Nez Perce National Historic Park, the Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area and the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. Many people think the state's name comes from an Indian word, but its actual origin is unclear. Its capital is Boise, and major cities include Nampa, Idaho Falls, Pocatello, Meridian, Coeur d'Alene and Twin Falls. More than 1.3 million residents live in Idaho, which spans 82,747 square miles. In 2000, the median value of owner-occupied housing units was $106,300.
