Suwanee
Suwanee History
Suwanee is a small-but-growing town that is located about a half-hour northeast of Atlanta. Nearby unincorporated areas push the population past 20,000, but Suwanee retains its small-town feel. Suwanee was named for a Shawnee Indian tribe that lived in the region during the late 18th century. Although the town grew throughout the 1800s and early 1900s, it wasn't incorporated until 1949. Most of the city's development has occurred in the last few years, and new construction is prevalent throughout the community. Many historic structures and sites remain in Suwanee, including Victorian homes and regional farms. Although an 1881 fire destroyed several of the city's original buildings, the Old Town area near Main and Scales streets is encircled by historic houses. While Suwanee's population and businesses base have exploded in the past 20 years, officials have worked to protect the city's natural environment and historic areas. Residents also enjoy the city's affordable housing, low crime rate and Southern charm.
Activities
A variety of water-based activities are available on the Chattahoochee River, which runs along the city's west side, and at Lake Lanier, 15 minutes to the north. The city has several parks and walking paths, and the North Georgia Mountains are just an hour away.
