Lilburn

Lilburn History

Early settlers first moved to Gwinnett County in 1818 after the state took control of the land from the Creek Indians. Lilburn was initially called McDanielsville after William McDaniel, who won the property in a land lottery.
The first church was built in 1823, and a school followed in 1839. McDanielsville remained sparsely populated throughout much of the 19th century until the Seaboard Airline Railway laid tracks in 1890. The town soon boasted a train depot, telegraph office, cotton gin and several businesses.
Around 1900, the town's name was changed to honor Seabord executive Lilburn Trigg Myers. Now known as Lilburn, the city incorporated in 1910. A fire in 1920 claimed most of the downtown business district, but the small town rebuilt and was reincorporated in 1955.
Today, Old Town stands in sharp contrast to new subdivisions that have been built within the city. Except for some isolated pieces of land, most open spaces have been developed, so the town probably will see little growth over the ensuing years.

Activities

Old Town Lilburn is a strip of antique shops, craft stores and gift shops located within historic buildings.
The Wynne-Russell House is a historic home that now serves as a museum and meeting hall.
Lilburn City Park features a ball field, walking trails, a pavilion, tennis court and basketball court.
And the annual Lilburn Daze Festival is held each October to celebrate the town's birthday.
