Buford

   Buford was named after Col. Algernon Buford, president of the Atlanta and Richmond Air-Line Railroad. The town was incorporated in 1872 and it became a city in 1896.
   In its early years, Buford was one of the state's top leather producers. It was also the largest city in Gwinnett County and was nicknamed “The City of Many Factories.”
   Although most of these factories are now closed, Buford still plays an important role in the Peach State. The Buford Dam is a major source of power, and the Lake Lanier Islands are a popular tourist destination.

Activities

   Many tourists come to the Buford area to enjoy the Lake Lanier Islands Beach and Water Park. The beach offers 38,000 acres of clean sand and clear water, and the water park has water slides, a wave pool and several rides. The Kiddie Lagoon and Water Wiggles are perfect for the little ones, and the Equestrian Center at Lake Lanier Islands offers guided tours and pony rides.
   The region's mild year-round climate is also perfect for Georgia's favorite pastime: golf! Northern Georgia and the greater Atlanta area are home to several golf courses that offer beautiful greens and tranquil scenery.
   You can learn more about the town's past at the Lanier Museum of Natural History, which focuses on the preservation of Northern Georgia's natural history. The museum features a variety of animals and plant life, and educational classes and programs are offered for children and adults alike.
