Welcome to the Peach State!

Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto first visited Georgia in 1540. James Oglethorpe established the state's first permanent settlement in 1733 as a refuge for English debtors, and Georgia entered the Union as the fourth state in 1788.  Georgia was a Confederate stronghold during the Civil War and saw extensive military action. In 1864, Union Gen. William T. Sherman burned Atlanta and destroyed a 60-mile-wide path to the coast, where he captured Savannah. The fall of Atlanta was a crucial turning point in the defeat of the South.

Today, Atlanta is considered the economic and cultural center of the Southeast. The state is a top producer of textiles and turpentine, and agriculture remains a major industry. Georgia produces twice as many peanuts as the next leading state. Other agricultural crops include corn, cotton, tobacco and peaches.  Georgia is home to many historical sites, many of which date back to the Civil War. These sites include the Antebellum Trail, the Confederate Memorial at Stone Mountain, Andersonville Prison Park and National Cemetery, Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park, and Historic Savannah.  Modern historic sites include the Little White House at Warm Springs, the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site and the Martin Luther King Jr. Historical Site. Other points of interest include the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, Etowah Mounds, Cumberland Island National Seashore, Calloway Gardens and the High Museum of Art.
