   Perdido Key is part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore, which was established through the National Park system. The seashore stretches 160 miles from Mississippi to the eastern tip of neighboring Santa Rosa Island. More than 80 percent of the seashore is under water, but the land areas provide ample opportunities for hiking, beach combing and wildlife viewing.
   The literal translation of Perdido Key is "Lost Island," but many visitors find this beautiful beachfront location holds a trove of natural treasures. Although parks and preserves make up 61 percent of the island, it also has several entertainment and recreational facilities.
